Today, I had a pretty uneventful day, plus Jonathan took my camera to go to Sweden for the day, so I am going to write about our little trip to see the famous Little Mermaid (Den Lille Havfrue). We took our bikes, and it probably took only about 30 minutes to get there. In Japan, I read that the little mermaid ranks among one of the World's 3 Most Disappointing Tourist Spots. So I didn't have high expectations, but I had to see it for myself.
The mermaid sits on a rock in the harbor, and it is quite small. I could see how it may disappoint people who came all the way to see her. I think you will be much less disappointed if you could see it without a big crowd of tourists around you trying to take photos of it, but you will have to be really lucky to be able to do that. As for my impression, I thought her petite physique and the way she is sitting and looking into the water reflect her sorrow, and I thought it was a quite beautiful statue myself. Yuto was asleep and didn't get to see the mermaid.
On our way home, the kids were asleep in the trailer, and we were hungry, so we stopped for our first hotdog in Denmark. It was just from a street truck, but it was very good! (with some crunchy fried onion toppings on it!).
Oh, curious about the other two disappointing tourist spots (by Japanese standards that is)?? One is the Merlion in Singapore, and the other is the Pee-pee boy (Mannekin Pis) in Belgium. According to Wikipedia, a same kind of survey was done in the UK in 2007, and the results (top three disappointing sights) were, No.3 - Times Square, No.2 - The Louvre ( Mona Lisa) and the number one disappointing sight was The Eiffel Tower!
