The craziest dining experience of my life

It's been a pretty exhausting last few days I haven't been able to blog (or even opening my computer)... But I have to tell you about our wild experience we had on Saturday!

It was drizzling in the morning, but cleared up in the afternoon, so the four of us went out and walked around the city center area where there are lots of shops and restaurants. After a while, we found a nice square, and stopped at one of the cafes for beer for us and apple juice for the kids.

Soon it was time for dinner so we headed to the restaurant where we had made a reservation. The restaurant was called Restaurant Puk, and it was supposed to be one of the best places for Danish food in Copenhagen. There were quite a few locals eating there too, which is always a good sign. We started with an order of shrimp cocktail which was topped with some caviar. Mio had a taste of the caviar, and before we knew it, she ate it all! Jonathan had a steak dish, and I had a roasted pork with boiled cabbage and some potatoes. According to our waiter, this pork dish is traditionally eaten on Christmas in Denmark. Jonathan said his steak was a little tough, but my pork was very good. The meat was moist, and the fat around it was cooked until it was very crisp.

It started raining just when our dishes arrived. But we still sat outside and continued on our meals just like everybody else, thinking it was pretty fun and exciting. But when I had about a third of my meal, it started pouring really really hard, and the wind started blowing hard as well. It was not funny any more, and we couldn't continue eating. Everybody sitting outside had to get inside the restaurant for shelter immediately. We just grabbed our bags, and rushed inside. The waiters/waitresses were too busy closing the umbrellas and moving the glasses, our partially eaten dishes just sat outside in the rain.

We were waiting inside the restaurant for the rain to calm down, but the it got worse and worse. Then the power outage! The restaurant went dark. The waiters/waitresses quickly put on candles, so there was no problem about that, but that meant that the kitchen was closed for the night (they could no longer cook!), so we couldn't order any more food (I was still hungry as I only had a part of my meal). And things got worse. The restaurant is located in a half basement, which means it is prone to flooding. Mio had to go to the bathroom, so Jonathan took her, and when he came back, he told me that the bathroom was flooding and water was overflowing from the toilet and from the sink! (Yuck!!) Then we noticed that the restaurant floor was also starting to flood. We kept our feet up and off the floor. The water kept rising, and by the time we left, there was over 2 inches (5cm) of water on the floor, and you don't want to think about what's in that water!! (disgusting!). People who had food continued to enjoy their meals (with their feet soaking in the water) in this chaotic situation.

It didn't look like the rain was going to stop anytime soon, and the water continued to rise in the restaurant, so Jonathan decided to go out in the storm to look for a taxi. I thought it would be very difficult to find a taxi in a situation like this, but after 15 minutes or so he came back and told us he has a taxi outside and we were on our way home! We were so relieved. I heard later that it was 2 months worth of rain in 2 hours, and the transportation (especially the trains) were all messed up the next day. What a crazy night...
